1984 Harley Davidson FXST Chopper

Built by RH from 11/30/98-7/5/99

This is not another aftermarket bike or assembled kit like you see all over the place, this is the real deal – a genuine and very original, one of a kind, all Harley Davidson chopper. Not a trailer queen, or a show bike, this bike was built to ride, it gets ridden, and it’s a blast!

I bought this bike in 1991 as a bone stock 1984 FXST Softail. A significant year, because it’s the first year of the softail frame and also the first year for the Evolution 80” motor.

After riding it stock for a couple years, I re-built the bike myself into the chopper you see here. Although a rider and not a show bike, we still won a 2nd Place at the Sacramento EasyRiders show in 2000, and a 1st place at the National HOG Rally in 1997.

The original stock softail frame has been stretched 3” in the downtubes, and has a new straight backbone. The stock neck with original numbers has been raked and reinforced at 51 degrees. The rake and trail have not been corrected – this is an old school chop and it flops, but is totally cool. I’ve been riding it for years and wouldn’t change a thing.

It has 10” over forks by Frank with new HD chrome legs and the lower triple tree has been smoothed, polished and re-chromed. Both stock wheels have been re-laced with chrome spokes and she runs on Avon Venom tires.

At the rear, it has Progressive Suspension shocks with White Bros lowering kit for a 3” drop. The seat is one of a kind, hand made by yours truly and gives a true seat height of 22”.

The tank is a Sportster 2.25 gallon peanut with sapphire blue ghost flames.

The rear fender is a Heritage softail fender that’s been cut and painted, and the turn signals have been replaced with marker lights front and rear.

It has 10 or 12’ apes (depends on how you measure) on 4” risers with the oil pressure light sunk into the middle of the bars between the risers.

The stock speedo sits on a custom made bracket attached to the front motor mount, to retain the trip meter to keep track of mileage, and she gets 50+ mpg on the freeway and will run dry at about 75 miles.

The original 80” (1340cc) motor is stock, and runs like a dream with only 26K original miles. The manifold has been replaced with a polished S&S and the stock Keihin carb has a mushroom air cleaner. The 1.75” drags are nice and loud, but won’t kill ya.

One unique feature of this model year is the stock rotary top 4 speed tranny that has both kick and electric start. The stock starter has been replaced with a high torque Spyke starter, and this bike also has the stock chain final drive and the M6 tensioner on the primary chain. The rear sprocket has been changed to get a bit more speed at lower rpms with the 4 speed, which makes a much more comfortable ride.

The original Chrome horseshoe oil bag has been powdercoated black and has a Harley maintenance free battery inside.
